Orel State University named after I.S. Turgenev is located in the ancient city of Orel, which was founded in 1566, and is now the center of Orel region. It is a comfortable city to live in, a calm city where every tenth resident is a student. A little over 311 thousand people live in the city. Orel is located in the European part of Russia, 368 km south-west of Moscow. It is connected with Moscow by a dynamic road, bus and rail service (it takes less than 4 hours to travel by high-speed train to Moscow). There are two unnavigable rivers in the city: the Oka and the Orlik River, its tributary. Orel region is the environmentally friendly one. The climate of the city is moderately continental. Winter is moderately cold. The periods of heat and relative coolness replace each other in summer. Autumn and spring are quite warm. The average cost of a food basket in Orel at the beginning of September 2019 was 10,362 rubles (about $ 162). There are several theaters, cinemas, entertainment centers, many museums, libraries, sports facilities and monuments, houses of worship, a well-developed network of catering (cafes, restaurants and canteens), health care and educational institutions in the city. It is considered one of the literary capitals of Russia (such Russian writers as I.S. Turgenev, I.A. Bunin, L.N. Andreev, A.A. Fet and others lived here). Orel State University named after I.S. Turgenev is the largest and most advanced University in the region. It was founded in 1919. Today it has the status of the Flagship University. There are 3 branches, 18 institutes and faculties, 102 departments in the structure of the University. About 18,000 students (including nearly 2,000 foreign students) representing 87 countries are studying at OSU named after I.S. Turgenev. Among them there are 13,000 intramural students; 267 graduate students, residents and doctoral students. Honours students can receive personal scholarships from the President and Government of the Russian Federation, and from the Governor of Orel Region. The University employs 181 Doctors of Sciences, 807 Candidates of Sciences, 11 PhD. There are 11 Dissertation Councils at the University. Currently, 422 basic and supplementary educational programs in areas and specialties of general, secondary vocational, higher, supplementary education, postgraduate study, residency training are implemented at the University. The University trains specialists in 40 extended groups of fields of education and specialties: Education and Pedagogy; Psychological Sciences, Economics and Management; Mathematics, Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, etc.), Technical Sciences (Mechanical Engineering, Architecture and Construction, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Land Transport Engineering and Technology, Instrument Making, etc.), Social Sciences and Humanities (Law, Linguistics, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, etc.), Medical Sciences, Visual and Applied Arts, and others. The scientific and innovative structure of the University includes the Engineering Center, Research and Educational Centers, Research Laboratories, Business Incubator, the Educational Observatory, the Agrobiostation, Herbarium named after V.N. Khitrovo (assigned the international acronym OHHI), the Center for Technology and Innovation Support, 2 experimental bases. The University has leadership in research and development in the areas of: people saving technologies in the socio-economic sphere, linguistics, special pedagogy and psychology, research of historical and cultural heritage, chemistry and biochemistry of processes, instrument-making and automated control systems, IT-technologies and cybersecurity, biomedical photonics, medical technology, agricultural and food biotechnology. The University has a developed infrastructure: 18 academic and laboratory buildings, specialized educational and research laboratories equipped with modern equipment, art, ceramic, metalwork and carpentry workshops, a fitness center with a swimming pool, student cafes, 12 dormitories, a student clinic, libraries, sports and gyms, a sports club, sports sections, language laboratories for learning foreign languages, recreation center "Zelenyy bereg". The library contains more than 500 thousand print publications and is connected to electronic databases.
